Aid for Airline? Qantas airlines are an iconic Australian business, which has heavily shaped the tourism industry. However in the 2013-14 financial year, (Qantas, 2014, pg.1) due to falls in revenue, growing competition and high expenses the airline reported a 2.8 billion dollar loss. (Mccrann, 2014) It was then that the company felt it required government support to assist them in getting back on their feet. Commonly referred to as a â€Å"bailout† and in this case more specifically a â€Å"debt guarantee†, this would involve the Australian Government covering Qantas’ debts, should the company collapse. How can we say that the United States is a free country when we can not openly express our religious beliefs in public? Prayer within public schools has begun a significant debate amongst people in society today. This has been a controversial topic in the United States for approximately over 50 years. Many argue whether or not it is socially appropriate to have education and religion in the same place. Employee satisfaction surveys offer organization with the information and methods to create optimistic employee associations and work atmosphere. Employee approaches, desire aspects, burnout propensities, loyalty, office environment and competitive intellect are important pointers for employee satisfaction. Effective companies emphasize on building and strengthening employee satisfaction so as to get the maximum output from their human capital. Wood and Payne (1998, cited in Pilbeam and Corbridge 2010, pp. 72-74) identified a number of competencies found in frameworks; among those were communication, building relationships, problem solving and analytical thinking. By my proposition, social interaction is accounted for by communication skills and building relationships, whilst creativity is accounted for by problem solving and analytical thinking. Sufficed to say social interaction and creativity are components of competencies. A means of assessing or measuring such competencies may be executed through continuous assessment in conjunction with other strategic initiatives aimed at establishing stable organizational orie ntation. Day (1994) describes such a practice as part of the organization-wide transformation becoming of market-driven organizations. Enhancing all organizational capabilities internal and external, calls for accurate assessment of current and future capabilities inclusive of ore competencies as the author further reveals. On the one hand people believe that the competences that drive better work performance and value added to the organization. In other perspective, these competences are equally measured to how well a person can balance his work and social life. The social interaction is one's own reflection and learning, therefore the same professional behavior and attitude one displays at work must match his/ her level of competence in his social life. In various cultures these could be left irrelevant to the work as some cultures may separate social life from work, while other societies have greater emphasis on integrating people's social interaction and work performance. Creativity is indeed a value added to people's ability to be innovative and have more capacity to implement their vision into reality.It would be correct to say that the motivation level of employees that have a good work-life balance is better than the motivation level of employees that does not have a good work-life balance. It is important that the motivation level should be directed towards the competency development. The motivation can really improve the productivity level of employees when the employees can develop their competency by remaining motivated. Sveiby (1997), posits five mutually dependent individual elements of competence; explicit knowledge, skill, experience, value judgment, social network. Social interaction and creativity are both component skills which make up managerial competence, the former is people-oriented involving an individuals relationships with others within the firm while the latter is intellectual, focusing on situation assessment and search for alternative ways to reach set goals. Scheer, et al (2012, citingReich, 2008 Kolb, 1984) suggest thatlearning is a process of individually self-organizing knowledge. The learning process is unpredictable, and knowledge is constantly altered through new insights, which are gained through individual experiences. This theory implies that though we can all learn the same processes and because of lifes experiences they will mean different things to different people, which should promote different approaches to role execution. The motivation level of employees could also depend on various external factors like the cultural and social factors. In this current state, businesses may not need to depend or look at culture as the major factor in relation to their proceedings or performance. That is to say international businesses may not base on culture in order to start business. This is because people have different cultures reason being that they come from different societies. For example in the Muslim community, it would be very hard to sell pork as a way of raising income. However because of modernization, one would carry out the business because the major goal of the business formation is profit maximization but not cultural formation. Robert M. Williamson (2006) wrote an article regarding around motivation and performance. Author argued that the leaders and managers should develop methods and ways to measure the motivation level of employees. The organization and leaders can actually improve the motivation level of employees when they can measure these motivation levels. His discussion supports the idea that measurements are important but also with challenges. Specifically, there are a lot measurement opportunities but these measurements seldom hit its target. These measurements just come and go and sometimes managers get lose track of what are those that really needs to be measured. Referring to Albert Einsteins sign in his office wall Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts. A view is that measurements and metric are not the only source of improvements. Another thing to bear in mind is this, when something is measured but it isnt important, it probably wont get do ne. This means that measurements sometimes do the task of assessing something that is not significant for the company. It is just so done because it is being required but do not impact the companys creation of value. Still an important concept is measure the wrong things and the organizations will likely get the wrong behaviors. This is true enough to management that is measuring another thing for the wrong performance indicator. Thus, instead of bringing performance improvement, it will lead to creation of unnecessary issues. In summary, organizations need to embrace improvement of performance using appropriate measurements that can cater to all types of competencies or work indicators. Organizations should use the findings to aid in decisions of what needs to be sustained or modified. Hence, measure all that counts for the success of the organization and do not linger on those, which do not create any impact for performance improvement. Conclusion It would be correct to say that motivation is the key driver of individual growth and development. The large and small organizations have realized that employees are the assets of the organization and the success of the organizations would depend on the way employees are working. Therefore, the organizations cannot neglect the importance of motivated workforce. The motivation acts as the catalyst for employees to work with higher productivity. It is believed that employees feel passionate and committed if they are motivated. Therefore, it is important that the organizations must create a platform where employees motivation can be improved. It would be correct to say that it is not easy to improve the motivation level of employees. Therefore, the leaders are always in search of the employees that are self-motivated. There could be both direct and indirect methods to increase the motivation level of employees. The direct methods are associated with employees perception and employee att itude and the organization must create a culture to improve the motivation through direct methods. The direct methods would include employee compensation, salary, and rewards. The indirect methods of employee motivation would include secondary or support factors like work conditions, tangible things within the organization, the infrastructure and facilities, etc. The self-motivation is a key for employees to work with 100% productivity levels. A true leader is one who can have an impact on the individual so that employees can work with dedication and commitment. As a conclusion, it is rightly said that if employees feel their jobs are interesting, challenging and important, they will be motivated, and that high motivation will lead to improved work performance, job satisfaction and reduced absenteeism and labor turnover. Abbe Sieyes essays Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes, better known as Abbe Sieyes, is considered by some scholars, the leader of the early Revolution in France; however, others consider him a selfish, jealous man. Then in 1784, he became vicar general and chancellor to the Bishop of Chartres. Abbe Sieyes then became a member of the Provincial Assembly of Orleans in 1787. If you have been convicted of a crime and plan to appeal, you are no longer known as the defendant, you are now the appellant in the case. In criminal cases, an appeal asks a higher court to look at the record of the trial proceedings to determine if a legal error occurred that may have affected the outcome of the trial or the sentence imposed by the judge. Appealing Legal Errors An appeal rarely challenges the decision of the jury, but rather challenges any legal errors that the judge or the prosecution may have made during the trial. Any ruling that the judge made during the preliminary hearing, during pre-trial motions and during the trial itself can be appealed if the appellant believes the ruling was in error. For example, if your lawyer made a pre-trial motion challenging the legality of the search of your car and the judge ruled that the police did not need a search warrant, that ruling can be appealed because it allowed evidence to be seen by the jury that would not have otherwise seen. Notice of Appeal Your attorney will have plenty of time to prepare your formal appeal, but in most states, you have a limited time to announce your intention to appeal your conviction or sentence. In some states, you have only 10 days to decide if there are issues that can be appealed. Your notice of appeal will need to include the exact issue or issues upon which you are basing your appeal. Many appeals have been rejected by higher courts simply because the appellant waited too long to raise the issue. Direct Appeals/Automatic Appeals Anyone who is sentenced to death is automatically given a direct appeal. Depending on the state, the appeal may be mandatory or dependent on the defendants choice. Direct appeals always go to the highest court in the state. In federal cases, the direct appeal goes to the federal courts.A panel of judges decides on the outcome of direct appeals. Trash Islands - the Ocean Garbage Patch As our global population expands, so does the amount of trash we produce, and a large portion of that trash then ends up in the worlds oceans. Due to oceanic currents, much of the trash is carried to areas where the currents meet. These collections of trash have recently been referred to as marine trash islands. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch The Great Pacific Garbage Patchsometimes called the Eastern Garbage Patchis an area with an intense concentration of marine trash located between Hawaii and California. The exact size of the patch is unknown, however, because it is constantly growing. The patch developed in this area because of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre- one of many oceanic gyres caused by a convergence of ocean currents and wind. As the currents meet, the earth’s Coriolis Effect (the deflection of moving objects caused by the Earth’s rotation) causes the water to slowly rotate, creating a funnel for anything in the water. Because this is a subtropical gyre in the northern hemisphere it rotates clockwise. It’s also a high-pressure zone with hot equatorial air and comprises much of the area known as the horse latitudes. Due to the tendency of items to collect in oceanic gyres, the existence of a garbage patch was predicted in 1988 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) after years of monitoring the amount of trash being dumped into the worlds oceans. The patch was not officially discovered until 1997, though, because of its remote location and harsh conditions for navigation. That year, Captain Charles Moore passed through the area after competing in a sailing race and discovered debris floating over the entire area he was crossing. Atlantic and Other Oceanic Trash Islands Though the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the most widely publicized of the so-called trash islands, the Atlantic Ocean has one as well in the Sargasso Sea. The Sargasso Sea is located in the North Atlantic Ocean between 70 and 40 degrees west longitude and 25 and 35 degrees north latitude. It is bounded by the Gulf Stream, the North Atlantic Current, the Canary Current, and the North Atlantic Equatorial current. Like the currents carrying trash into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, these four currents carry a portion of the worlds trash to the middle of the Sargasso Sea where it becomes trapped. In addition to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the Sargasso Sea, there are five other major tropical oceanic gyres in the worldall with conditions similar to those found in these first two. Components of Trash Islands After studying the trash found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Moore learned that 90% of the trash found there was plastic. His research groupas well as NOAAhas studied the Sargasso Sea and other patches around the world and their studies in those locations have had the same findings. It is estimated that 80% of the plastic in the ocean comes from land sources while 20% comes from ships at sea. The plastics in the patches consist of items like water bottles, cups, bottle caps, plastic bags, and fish netting. It’s not just  large plastic items that make up the trash islands, however. In his studies, Moore found that the majority of the plastic in the worlds oceans is made up of billions of pounds of raw plastic pellets called nurdles. These pellets are a byproduct of plastics manufacturing. It is significant that most of the trash is plastic because it does not break down easilyespecially in water. When plastic is on land, it is more easily heated and breaks down faster. In the ocean, the plastic is cooled by the water and becomes coated with algae which shield it from sunlight. Because of these factors, the plastic in the world’s oceans will last well into the future. Garbage Islands Impacts on Wildlife The presence of the plastic in these patches is having a significant impact on wildlife in a number of ways. Whales, seabirds, and other animals can easily be snared in the nylon  nets and six-pack rings prevalent in the garbage patches. They are also in danger of choking on things like balloons, straws, and sandwich wrap. Additionally, fish, seabirds, jellyfish, and oceanic filter feeders easily mistake brightly colored plastic pellets for fish eggs and krill. Research has shown that over time, the plastic pellets can concentrate toxins which are passed on to sea animals when they eat them. This could poison them or cause genetic problems. Once the toxins are concentrated in the tissue of one animal, they can magnify across the food chain similar to the pesticide DDT. Finally, the floating trash can also aid in the spread of species to new habitats. Take, for instance, a type of barnacle. It can attach to a floating plastic bottle, grow, and move to an area where it is not naturally found. The arrival of the new barnacle could then possibly cause problems for the areas native species. The Future for the Trash Islands Research conducted by Moore, NOAA, and other agencies show that  trash islands are continuing to grow. Attempts have been made to clean them up but there is simply too much material over too large of an area to make any significant impact. Some of the best ways to aid in the cleanup of these islands are to suppress their growth by enacting stronger recycling and disposal policies, cleaning up the worlds beaches, and reducing the amount of trash going into the worlds oceans.
