Group Projects Dont End in High School (Which is Great)
Group Projects Dont End in High School (Which is Great) If you thought that you would be done with group projects once you graduated from high school, you are wrong. Illinois is all about collaboration and working in groups toward a goal. This is often manifested in the form of a class project, and there are countless benefits to more group projects in school. Growing up, you probably got used to doing group projects with people you grew up who may have even lived in your neighborhood. At Illinois, we attract students from around the world so your group project team can have people of all backgrounds from different towns, states, and countries! Group projects in classes help you develop teamwork skills that are vital in your post-graduate career. There are very few careers that involve working completely independently, and there are even fewer majors you can pursue that can be done without any collaboration. For the past 8 weeks, I have been working on a group project for my advertising class. The assignment was to create an advertising campaign for McKinley Health Center, which is the universitys on-campus health center. The campaign is about convincing students to get their free flu shots at McKinley instead of going to Walgreens or back home to their doctors. Source: The Daily Illini I was in a group of four students from diverse backgrounds. The researcher on our team is a student-athlete. Our account manager is from the Chicago suburbs. Our strategist is from China, and then there was me! Our diverse skillsets and backgrounds each brought a special talent and perspective thats needed while working collaboratively. Youll be working on group projects for the rest of your life, but enjoy these group projects with fellow Illini while you can! Daniel Class of 2018 Iâm an Advertising major in the College of Media. Iâm from a northwest suburb of Chicago called Buffalo Grove. I chose Illinois because it was the first university in the entire world to offer an Advertising major, which is pretty cool!

Mentors matter The wrong vs. right way to find yours
Mentors make all the difference in your career. From the outset of post-grad to especially when you are pursuing leadership and advancement roles, mentors are essential components to success. Everyone agrees they are important and everyone tells you that you need to find one now. And yet, most likely everything you have ever been told or taught about finding and securing a mentor is wrong. Dead wrong, counterproductive, and a waste of your time and energy. Some fundamental truths about mentors Before we get into the how of finding and securing mentors we need to understand and manage our expectations of what exactly a mentorââ¬â¢s role is in our professional journeys and be realistic. Mentors are not your parents nor are they your best friends. They are not responsible for the entire trajectory of your career nor are they in control of your well-being and state of mind. Only you can control that. Some other fundamentals that we need to keep in mind: Mentors find you, not the other way around. Mentors come into your life when they are least expected but often most needed. They gravitate to you for any number of reasons but primarily this occurs when there is a connection to what you and they are passionate about. Mentors are not life coaches. Mentors have careers and lives of their own, respect their time and energy. They can steer you in new directions and/or provide key insights and support for one or two aspects of your professional development and growth, at most, not a map for your entire professional life. Forced Mentorship doesnââ¬â¢t work. Most organizational mentorship programs often fail because they are forced, donââ¬â¢t consider the natural behavioral patterns that occur between people and typically have limited impact long-term. Avoid these programs like the plague, they are ineffective suck the life out of you and donââ¬â¢t work. 1st rule: Stop doing this Donââ¬â¢t ever go up to someone youââ¬â¢ve recently met and ask them to be your mentor. In fact, donââ¬â¢t ask anyone on the spot to be your mentor. It is awkward and wonââ¬â¢t serve the ultimate purpose of engaging someone in your professional life. You would think this would go without saying but I have witnessed this countless times at various professional events as well as been approached myself and it is just bad form when it comes to building a relationship with someone. Instead, if there is someone you admire and want to engage for advice reach out in a non-threatening way via email and ask if you can take them to coffee (30 minutes of their time) to learn more about their perspective on a particular issue that you know they are passionate about and that you also have interest in. From there you can organically share your story and solicit advice but here again, this is just an invitation for them to offer advice and counsel, not a forced relationship whereby they feel obligated for the whole of your professional life. Three essential steps to securing your mentor: STEP I ââ¬â Look Inward, Assess Your Strengths, Find Define Your Calling To find a great mentor you need to look inward first and foremost. This may sound counterintuitive but it is essential to securing mentors throughout your career. You need to also have a good sense of your strengths and I highly recommend taking the Strengths test 2.0. It will give you your top 5 strengths (there is also a version for entrepreneurs) as well as verbiage to help you describe those strengths when you are promoting yourself. It is also vital that you find and define your calling. If you donââ¬â¢t have a clear idea of what your professional calling is or at a minimum a solid understanding of your strengths combined with what you are most passionate about you wonââ¬â¢t be able to attract mentors that will serve your long-term career goals. Step II Develop a powerful POV, then share it People arenââ¬â¢t inspired or drawn to someone who is just on the hunt for their next job opportunity. People are moved and motivated by ideas, stories, purpose and powerful points of view (POV). By people who think differently and want to make a difference. A point of view is something that you have spent time thinking deeply about and have done your homework on if someone challenges you. Most importantly, a distinct point of view is something that others can argue with you about. Strong POVs are memorable, attract others to you and are the cornerstone of any enduring, successful professional brand. Once you have developed a strong point of view share it by publishing it as a post online, debating with close friends/colleagues and/or as part of a speaking engagement. The more you put your ideas out into the professional universe the more likely you are to connect with and have mentors gravitate towards you to support your efforts. Step III Be a mentor to others cultivate a growth mindset Regardless of where you are in your career, the best way to naturally attract mentors to your efforts is to find ways of mentoring yourself. Find ways of being a mentor and being of service in the areas you are most passionate about professionally. When I look back at the mentors who have come into my life it has been because they observed that I was mentoring others who were junior to me or struggling with a project. It was also because they saw in me a growth mindset where it wasnââ¬â¢t just about me and the advancement of my career but about service to a greater cause, a higher purpose. There were also numerous occasions where I was introduced to incredible mentors because I volunteered without an expectation of pay or promotion for a project or effort so I could learn and be challenged. I have continually demonstrated this growth mindset throughout my career and have been rewarded with countless mentors that I could have never anticipated coming into my professional journey. Bottom Line People like being around others who are constantly learning, growing and serving others. People also like helping others who know who they are, have an idea of where they want to go, and are relentless in their pursuit of that goal. Start with these fundamentals and the mentors will come. Socratess philosophy - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 790 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/08/06 Category People Essay Level High school Tags: Socrates Essay Did you like this example? Plato, The Last Days of Socrates provides a useful insight into the philosophy and mind of Socrates. Plato showcases such philosophies in four dialogues in which Socrates is held on trial for heresy around 403 B.C. The trial serves as an opportunity for Plato to put Socratess philosophies on display, mainly on the responsibility of the individuals personal responsibility for their actions, how they affect the community at hand, and to encourage critical thinking to better understand the world around you. In the first dialogue, Euthyphro, Plato tells the story of the encounter between Socrates and Euthyphro meet before the king of Archon in 399 B.C. The main reason why Euthyphro is there to speak with Socrates about is murder. Euthyphro claims that his father murdered a servant when in reality, the servant was attacked and murdered by another servant. This situation prompts the philosophies of both men on the nature of holiness. The reader learns of Socrates ability of questioning others opinions and thought processes during tricky situations such as Euthyphros. You can also see how Socrates can portray a sense of arrogance, which makes some people his enemies as they get offended by him. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Socratess philosophy" essay for you Create order One of the most intriguing parts of this dialogue is how vague the debate between Socrates and Euthyphro ends. Plato seems to suggest that there is no right or wrong definition of holiness. The goal that Plato is reaching for is to teach people that knowledge is only obtained when we are able to justify our beliefs. Thus, teaching is more a matter of leading people toward finding the right answers on their own and being able to justify their answers rather than just giving them out. There is no personal growth within oneself when they are just given the answers to lifes problems and difficulties. They become a sheep to be led around rather than taking ownership of their thoughts and ideas. In the second dialogue, The Apology, Plato explains the trial of Socrates. Plato presents Socrates as being skilled at the Socratic Method of asking questions in an intellectual conversation. He often made skeptics on the opposing side of the argument contradict themselves In his trial, Socrates defends himself on charges of heresy, not acknowledging the citys gods, creating new deities, and corrupting of youth. Socrates defends himself, being honest and direct, however he claims this type of behavior is from a prophecy in which he claims he is wiser than anyone. This proves to be a weakness for Socrates as he comes across as arrogant and creates enemies, largely the reason why he was summoned to court in the first place. However, Socratess death sentence is delayed so he is put in jail in Athens. In the third dialogue, Crito, Socrates friend, Crito, attempts to help him escape. Socrates challenges Critos intent and refuses to try and escape prison. By trying to escape prison, Socrates believed that he would be contradicting his philosophies and values which would be harmful to his community as they know him. The problem is that Socratess accusers have sentenced him in an unjust way. They accuse him more as an enemy rather than accusing him on legit grounds to hold a trial for him. One of Critos arguments is that Socrates would be supporting the wrong-doing of his enemies by following through with his death sentence. Socrates counters by saying that he would be harming the laws, which are just, if he tries to escape. If Socrates stays in prison, he will be siding with his accusers but if he escapes he will be breaking the laws. In the end, Socrates chooses to obey the laws of the city and accept his fate. In the fourth dialogue, Phaedo, Plato advocates his belief of the immortality of the soul. Socrates knows that death is inevitable so he believes we should welcome it, allowing us to obtain true wisdom if ones life is lived as it should be. In Phaedos account, Socrates explains to his friends that a true philosopher should look forward to death. Through four different arguments, Socrates explains that setting the soul free from earthly needs is the purpose of being a philosopher. He believes that your body is temporary while your soul is eternal, thus, your soul and values live on after you pass. Socratess philosophy still has influence in the present day. His method of debating and creating a narrative are still broadly used and studied. His goal was to encourage critical thinking and understanding of the world around you. Although he made many enemies with his wisdom and knowledge and ultimately led to him to his fate, his ideas and philosophy have survived him and provide a foundation for understanding western philosophy.

Global Climate Change And Global Warming - 1054 Words
Energy is a huge part of our daily lives and over the years we have seen energy consumption rates raise significantly. It really isn t much of a secret that global climate change is happening. From the melting of the polar ice caps, to record severe temperatures, rise in natural disasters, rise in pollution, greater number of vector-borne and water borne illnesses, and much more. Unless there is something done to change the current technology being used to provide energy to the human population global climate change will only continue to get worse. Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century and we must act and change the use of energy technology and oil for our sustainable future. In order to understand the health impacts of global climate change we must first look into what is global climate change and global warming. In short global climate change are any natural changes on our planet that are being caused by human activities. These human activates mainl y consist of the burning fossil fuels, coal and oil. When these fossil fuels are burned pollution is created. This pollution fills and form what is called greenhouse gasses and in turn creates the greenhouse effect. These gasses re-radiate thermal radiation in all directions and trap in heat on our planet. Without these gasses this thermal radiation would normally dissipate back outside of the atmosphere. This is much like the effect of a greenhouse in which this effect gets its name from.Show MoreRelatedGlobal Warming : A Global Climate Change1457 Words à |à 6 Pageshappened by global warming like, increasing the temperature degrees, and melting the snow mountains around the word. When the idea of global warming first burst onto the main stage in the late 20th century, a majority of Americans were skeptical. Many of the predictions that the original scientists made proved to be incorrect, and often the scientific methods the scientists used were faulty. Since the early stages though, the science behind global climate change has gotten better. We now have more data and better modelsRead MoreGlobal Climate Change : The Global Warming1472 Words à |à 6 PagesThe Global Climate Change Currently when human life is growing, human activities impact on the environment and climate to lead to global climate change.
